ISOSHADO OSPITE ALLA SHADO CON 2 Derby (UK) - 30 giugno 2018 |

Ogni ospite alternava un’intervista gestita dagli organizzatori della convention, seguita da uno spazio per le domande del pubblico, una sessione di autografi e una sessione di foto con i fan.
La proiezione di Kill Straker ha introdotto l’intervista ad Alan Perry, regista di questo e altri episodi di UFO, e David Sumner, il capitano Craig che in questo celebre episodio attenta alla vita del comandante Straker e poi tenta di fare esplodere la base lunare. La simpatia di Alan rende imperdibile ogni convention a cui partecipa.
Allo stesso modo, le proiezioni di Confetti Check A-OK e Psychobombs hanno introdotto le interviste a Suzanne Neve (Mary Straker in questo episodio e in A question of priorities) e David Collings (Daniel Clark, che sotto il controllo degli alieni strapazza il comandante Straker e poi fa esplodere un’installazione SHADO).
Suzanne Neve, tra le altre cose, ha raccontato della sua reazione assolutamente negativa alla proposta di partecipare a un secondo episodio di UFO, dopo A question of priorities. Non vedeva come, dopo la morte del figlio ci potesse essere spazio per un altro episodio, ma la convinsero con l’idea di un flashback.
David Collings invece, ha raccontato di come avesse fatto infuriare i tecnici, che avevano preparato la recinzione della base SHADO, in modo tale che lui la potesse squarciare a mani nude. Pronto a girare, ebbe l’impressione di sentire un “Action!” e aprì la rete con una manata, mentre nessuno girava, costringendo i tecnici a una lunga e sgradita opera di riparazione.
Altri ospiti sono stati Ayshea Brough, membro regolare del cast, che ha raccontato i suoi ricordi sul set con Ed Bishop e Gerry e Sylvia Anderson, e Alan Harris, membro dell’equipaggio dello Skydiver.
Uno dei momenti più interessanti della convention è stata la presentazione di Alan Shubrook, tecnico degli effetti speciali, che ha descritto con una ricca proiezione di slide molte delle tecniche usate per la realizzazione di UFO e altre serie di Gerry e Sylvia Anderson. Molte delle foto usate nella presentazione sono incluse nel libro The making of UFO special effects, che diversi membri di ISOSHADO hanno avuto modo di ordinare.
ISOSHADO ha partecipato all’evento contribuendo con l’esposizione delle parrucche originali di Ed Bishop e Dolores Mantez, un costume originale di George Sewell, la camicetta viola indossata da Wanda Ventham in Timelash, una cintura di sicurezza a imbracatura indossata dai piloti degli intercettori, e l’orologio di Ed Bishop indossato in tutti gli episodi della serie.
Altri modelli originali, tra cui una SHADO jeep restaurata, sono stati esposti da James Winch, un altro collezionista della serie. Anche Paolo Malaguti, col supporto di Paolo Brandimarte, e James sono stati intervistati in quanto collezionisti privati che potevano offrire il loro punto di vista di fan particolari della serie.
A contorno della convention erano presenti anche venditori di foto, DVD, libri, video, tra cui Fanderson, e il tutto si è concluso con la proiezione sul grande schermo di Doppelganger (Doppia Immagine nello spazio), film che non ebbe un grande successo, anche per la contemporanea uscita di un capolavoro come 2001: Odissea nello spazio, ma che rimane comunque interessante come precursore di UFO, sia per il ruolo di alcuni futuri attori di UFO, che per la presenza di oggetti quali veicoli, costumi, tute spaziali, armi, poi utilizzati nella nostra serie TV preferita.

Derby (UK) - 30 June 2018
The second edition of the SHADO CON convention was held on Saturday, June 30th, 2018, in Derby, hosted by the QUAD cinema. The screening rooms (one of which is dedicated to John Hurt, unforgettable first victim in Alien) and other rooms in the building have witnessed an intense rotation of events: interviews with the several guests, UFO episodes screenings, and a rich exhibition of models and original props and costumes.
Each guest took part in an interview managed by the SHADO CON organizers, followed by a Q&A session, as well as by an autograph and a photo session with the fans.
The screening of Kill Straker has introduced the interview with Alan Perry, who directed this and other UFO episodes, and David Sumner, as captain Craig, who in this much appreciated episode tries to kill Commander Straker and then tries to destroy Moonbase. Alan’s humor makes any convention he takes part to an event you should not miss.
By the same token, screenings of Confetti check A-OK and Psychobombs introduced the interviews with Suzanne Neve (Mary Straker in this episode and in A question of priorities) and David Collings (Daniel Clark, who under aliens’ control shakes commander Straker like a rag and then destroys a SHADO installation).
Suzanne Neve, among other things, recollected her initial refusal to take part in a second UFO episode, after A question of priorities. She did not see how, after their son’s death, there could be room for a further plot, but she was convinced by the idea of a flashback.
David Collings recollected how he made the crew crazy, who had carefully prepared the metallic fence that he tears down with his bare hand. Unfortunately, he seemed to hear a “Action!” and ripped down the fence, when no one was filming. The crew did not appreciate the hours needed to set up the fence again.
The guest list also included Ayshea Brough, one of the cast regulars, who shared her memories of working alongside with Ed Bishop and Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, and Alan Harris, who was featured as a member of the Skydiver crew.
One of the CON’s highlights was the presentation given by Alan Shubrook, special effects technician, who described with the support of slides and photographs the techniques used in shooting UFO and other series by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. Several of the photos used in the presentation are also included in his book The making of UFO special effects, which a few ISOSHADO members have been able to order.
ISOSHADO was invited by the organizers and took part in the convention, and founder Paolo Malaguti contributed original items to the exhibition: two original wigs used by Ed Bishop and Dolores Mantez, one of George Sewell jumpsuits, the purple blouse worn by Wanda Ventham in Timelash, a restraint used by interceptor pilots, as well as Ed Bishop’s watch that we get to see in Timelash.
Other original UFO models, including a restored SHADO jeep have been put on display by James Winch, another UFO collector. Also James, along with Paolo Malaguti supported by Paolo Brandimarte, have been interviewed as major private collectors, who could offer their viewpoint as peculiar fans.
The convention also featured a sellers’ exhibition, including Fanderson, offering photos for the autograph sessions, DVDs, books, etc.
The last event of the CON was the screening of Doppelganger, a movie that was not greeted by success, also because of the simultaneous release of a masterpiece like 2001: A space odyssey, but is nevertheless an interesting precursor of UFO, featuring actors and props (including the future SHADO jeeps) that have appeared in our favorite TV series.
