Per chi è stato “malato” di Ufo-Shado, e malato lo è ancora anni e anni dopo, incontrare Ayshea Brough al MO.OM Hotel di Olgiate Olona è stato semplicemente emozionante. Per un motivo semplice: la legge del tempo ci sta pian piano privando dei personaggi della serie-cult. Ayshea, il tenente Ayshea Johnson della consolle operativa nella sede centrale di SHADO, è così uno di quelli ancora “available”: la sua presenza, pertanto, ha avuto prima di tutto il sapore dell’occasione imperdibile. Ai tempi della produzione dei 26 episodi a noi tanto cari era una giovane ragazza, tra l’altro in attesa di sposarsi: le nozze avvennero proprio durante le registrazioni (non ricordo se le abbiamo chiesto come andò con la licenza matrimoniale e il viaggio con il marito, dal quale peraltro anni dopo si sarebbe separata: forse non l’abbiamo fatto e immagino che avrà dovuto rinviare tutto a sedute concluse). Oggi Ayshea è una tranquilla signora inglese che a mio avviso ha nell’aplomb compassato e nella gestualità il ricordo di essere stata un’artista: attrice, ma anche cantante (però, con somma nostra delusione, non ha accettato di proporci qualche suo pezzo…). Anche lei è rimasta colpita dalla passione che muove ISOSHADO nella missione di tenere vivo il ricordo di questi telefilm da 50 minuti l’uno che hanno avuto solo il torto di vedere la luce in un’era in cui non avevano ancora inventato Netflix, Prime e le altre piattaforme oggi in voga. Anche lei ha convenuto che i tempi moderni avrebbero offerto una chance diversa alla serie, anche se la bellezza di Ufo-Shado è di aver resistito così a lungo: “Non avrei mai immaginato che, 50 anni dopo, si parlasse ancora di questi telefilm e che la loro memoria fosse così viva”.
Ayshea, “torturata” da Paolo Brandimarte (scherzo: intervista precisa e dettagliata), ci ha raccontato alcuni aneddoti dei giorni in cui la serie vide la luce: ad esempio, una volta chiese di apparire nello scenario di Base Luna “per poter indossare la parrucca viola e il costume delle operatrici: era pesante, con tutti quegli orpelli in plastica, ma era anche intrigante”. Gli orari, poi, erano davvero duri: già alle 7 bisognava essere in sala trucco, quindi alle 8 cominciavano le operazioni e la canonica ora di fine lavori (le 17) veniva sforata spesso e volentieri. Una delle chicche di questa quotidianità stava ad esempio nel fatto che Ed Bishop (il nostro caro comandante Straker, pace all’anima sua) abitava troppo lontano dagli studi di registrazione: per non rischiare che il traffico londinese della mattina gli impedisse di arrivare puntuale, aveva trovato modo di dormire negli “studios”. Ed è rimasto lì fino alla fine. “Così qualche sera lo invitavo a cena, visto che io, a differenza sua, vivevo lì vicino”. Straker, tra l’altro, fu al centro di un “fattaccio” con Ayshea: “In una scena mi afferrò e mi baciò con foga sulle labbra. Avrebbe dovuto farlo in maniera più… tranquilla. Fui colta in contropiede, ero sorpresa e imbarazzata anche perché ero alla vigilia del matrimonio: oggi gli avrei dato di sicuro una sberla, ma quella volta rimasi come intontita e, istintivamente, continuai a recitare come da copione”. Curioso anche il retroscena che si riallaccia alla scena di quell’episodio – uno dei primi – in cui si vede una ragazza in minigonna rosa (è lei, ovviamente) che si dirige verso la sede di Shado, ripresa di spalle e con ancheggiamenti particolarmente sexy. “Gerry Anderson mi fece camminare. Ma io mi accorsi che mi guardava restando sempre alle spalle. Gli chiesi: “Non è che lei è nella posizione sbagliata?” Mi rispose: “Assolutamente no, guardare il suo “retro” è proprio quello che mi serve…”.

For those who have been "sick" of Ufo-Shado, and still are sick years and years later, meeting Ayshea Brough at the MO.OM Hotel in Olgiate Olona was simply exciting. For a simple reason: the law of time is gradually depriving us of the characters of the cult-series. Ayshea, Lieutenant Ayshea Johnson at the operational console at the SHADO headquarters, is thus one of those still "available": her presence, therefore, first of all had the flavor of an unmissable opportunity. At the time of the production of the 26 episodes so dear to us she was a young girl, among other things waiting to get married: the wedding took place during the recording (I don't remember if we asked her how it went with the marriage license and the trip with the husband, from whom, however, years later she would have separated: perhaps we did not, and I imagine that she would have had to postpone everything until the sessions ended). Today Ayshea is a quiet English lady who in my opinion has the memory of being an artist in her aplomb and gestures: actress, but also singer (however, to our great disappointment, she did not agree to sing one of her songs to us).
She too was struck by the passion that moves ISOSHADO in the mission to keep alive the memory of this 50-minute series that had only the misfortune of seeing the light in an era in which they had not yet invented Netflix, Prime and other common broadcasting platforms of today. She too agreed that modern times would have offered a different chance to the series, even if the beauty of Ufo-Shado is that it has lasted so long: "I never imagined that, 50 years later, there was still someone talking about these series and that its memory was so alive".
Ayshea, "tortured" by Paolo Brandimarte (I'm joking: the interview was precise and detailed), told us some anecdotes of the days in which the series saw the light: for example, once she asked to appear in the Moon Base scenario to be able to wear the wig purple and the costume of the operators: it was heavy, with all those plastic trappings, but it was also intriguing. Working hours, then, were really hard: already at 7 you had to be in the make-up room, then at 8 the operations began and the canonical work end time (17) was often and willingly exceeded. One of the gems of this everyday life was for example in the fact that Ed Bishop (our dear commander Straker, peace be upon his soul) lived too far from the recording studios: in order not to risk that the London traffic in the morning prevented him from arriving on time, he had found a way to sleep in the studios.
And it stayed there until the end. "So some evenings I invited him to dinner, since I, unlike him, lived nearby". Straker, among other things, was at the center of a "crime" with Ayshea: "In one scene he grabbed me and kissed me passionately on the lips. He should have done it more calmly. I was caught off guard, I was surprised and embarrassed too. because I was on the eve of the wedding: today I would have given him a slap for sure, but that time I was stunned and, instinctively, I continued to act as expected ". Also curious is the background that is linked to the scene of the first episode in which we see a girl in a pink miniskirt (it's her, of course) who heads towards Shado's headquarters, shot from behind and with particularly sexy sways. "Gerry Anderson made me walk. But I noticed that he was always looking at me from behind. I asked him: Isn't it that you are in the wrong position? He replied: Absolutely not, looking at your back is just what I need."
